Taipei People is a collection of short stories by Pai Hsien Yung that deals with the lives of the Chinese diaspora who fled to Taiwan after the fall of the Nationalist government. The stories are simultaneously stories of exile and growing old, with a strong undercurrent of regret. However, the characters are not histrionic or despairing about their new lives. Instead, there is stoicism and endurance, born of knowing that they have at least survived and can still take pleasure in what life has to offer.
